The Fulbright Scholar Program is open to US scholars and professionals to lecture and/or conduct research at Italian institutions in a wide variety of academic disciplines. Scholarships are awarded through an annual competition administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars in collaboration with the Fulbright Commission. Scholars must have adequate academic experience in teaching and/or research and present a solid lecture and/or research project proposal agreed upon with an Italian host institution. Except for the junior scholar awards, applicants are expected in general to have a minimum of 7 years of teaching experience beyond the Ph.D. During their stay, scholars may be invited to give occasional lectures/seminars at various Italian universities. Number of available grants 14 Awards (All disciplines Awards: 1 Junior Research, 1 Lecturing, 3 Research Awards; 4 Lecturing Awards in American Studies, 2 Junior Lecturing Awards in Math and Sciences, 1 Junior Lecturing Award in Mechatronics Engineering, 1 Lecturing/Research Award in Policies and Tools for Environmental Sustainability, 1 Lecturing/Research Award in Scientific Research Methodology) Grant Benefits Grant benefits generally include a maintenance allowance, a settling-in allowance and a travel allowance to cover round-trip international travel. Monthly maintenance stipend varies according to the award. Some of the awards offer accommodation or a financial contribution to offset housing costs. Fulbright scholars are covered by Health and Accident Insurance for the whole grant period, provided by United States Department of State. Grant Length Grant duration ranges from 3 to 6 months according to the award. Entry Visa to Italy The Fulbright scholar will need to obtain a visa for study purposes (visto per studio) for the whole duration of his/her stay in Italy. The Fulbright Commission gives assistance to the grantees in the application for the visa. In case grant period exceeds 3 months, the Fulbright Commission assists grantees in applying for a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno).
